Pretty Pink Vegan Doughnuts

We're finally getting some snow.  And a snowy morning calls for doughnuts!  At least this snowy morning did.  So, I put my doughnut pan I got for my birthday to use.

Here is my recipe:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup soy milk
1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar
1/2 tsp vanilla
Energ-G egg replacer for 1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil

1/4 tsp salt
couple dashes of nutmeg
couple dashed of cinnamon

Mix all together and bake at 350 degrees for 10 min.
They will be really soft so make sure to let them cool completely before taking them out of the pan.
Then glaze! 

This recipe actually made 8 doughnuts but they were going pretty fast.  It was hard to catch a picture.

Valentine's Day Graham Cracker House

This is a bit non-traditional, but Miss K has been begging me to make a gingerbread house.  I hate gingerbread, and I didn't want to spend time making it so I kept trying to distract her with other things.  Today, I finally gave in.  Only I didn't make gingerbread.  I used (and this is a little embarrasing) old stale graham crackers, left over icing from Christmas, jelly beans from last from last Easter, and conversation hearts....  from last Valentine's day!  heh heh.  Now you all probably think I never clean out my cabinets.  And I guess you would be right.

Turned out kind of cute!

Miss K got her gingerbread house fix with minimal work on my end, which is much needed with the lack of sleep around this place.  Maybe she won't bug me about it again until next Christmas!  And after today's project, there won't be any year old candy laying around!

Valentine Wreath

I guess it is time to take down the Christmas swag I made back in November.  I made it using the branches we cut off our Christmas tree.

I used cinnamon scented pine cones so everytime I opened the door it smelled like Christmas.  I'm sad to see it go, but it's almost February, so it's probably time.

Today I made a Valentine's day wreath to replace it.  I took forever!   I gleaned some inspiration from a few wreaths I saw on Pinterest here and here.

 I really wanted to do a heart shape but I only had a round foam wreath form I picked up at a garage sale.  I also had a few yards of some cream satin.  I don't even know what I was originally going to do with it, but it worked great for this project.

  

First off, I cut my strips of fabric.  And, no, I didn't measure the width.  I just used the ruler to cut a straight line.  I craft about the same way I follow a recipe...

 Then I folded and glued the strips of fabric into rose shapes.  Again, not following any real method.  Then I glued a thousand of them onto the wreath mold.  Well, maybe, not quite a thousand, but it took a lot more than I anticipated.

  

Here it is finished.  I'm not super excited about how it turned out, but I would say it was a success as I went through several sticks of hot glue and didn't burn myself even once!

Valentine's day is only three weeks away

and I have zero themed decorations.  Don't you have to decorate according to the holidays/seasons once you have kids?  Maybe not.  Anyway, today I finished up a small canvas I started yesterday.

I did use Pinterest as my inspiration, but not any one certain site.  So, I can't really point you to any specific tutorial.  I just looked at a few ideas then worked with what I had collecting dust in the basement.

Here is my arsenal:

Acrylic paint, crackle medium, mod podge, newpaper, and a small canvas.  I have an embarrassing number of these small square canvases that I need to use.  So expect to see several upcoming projects using them!  

Paint a layer of black paint.  Let dry.  Add crackle medium.  Let dry.  Add layer of blue paint.  Let dry.

Then you have something that looks a little like this.

Then I painted some newspaper red, cut out a heart shape and mod podeged it on the canvas.  (I can use mod podge as a verb right?)

I printed out the words I wanted, because I have the handwriting of a third grader.  I thought I would rub the ink off onto the canvas so I could draw over it, but I forgot to print the mirror image.  So I just mod podged them on there.  I kind of like the look of the paper on there anyway.  

Add to shelf with some felt roses and voila!  I have a smidgen of v-day decor.
